Cecil Foster tells the tale of an estranged mother and daughter caught in the web of a crushing poverty and the immigration bureaucracy.  Moving from the warm spiritual life of Jamaica to the cold isolation of Toronto, Sleep On, Beloved follows Ona Morgan she leaves her Jamaican home and her newborn daughter Suzanne to pave the way for a new life in Canada.  Thwarted by the twin demons of bad luck and lack of money, and hounded by turbulent emotions created by a marriage of convenience, Ona finds herself plunged into an alien culture and the painful struggle against racism. When twelve-year-old Suzanne finally joins Ona in Toronto, they are both shocked to find that their relationship is irreparably altered.  Locked in battle, they fight to reconcile the threads of cultural and family identity; each too proud and too injured to ask for support.  As their relationship unravels, Suzanne is drawn into a life of table dancing and crime, and Ona's reconnection with her cultural heritage emerges with devastating consequences.
