Originally a Japanese form that flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries, haiku has seen a growth of popularity in the English language since the 1980s. A haiku is a short poem recording the essence of a moment keenly perceived in which Nature is linked to human nature. Its attraction lies in its ability to create in the mind of the reader an image so real it is almost tangible. It celebrate simplicity, emotion and imagery, one in which only a few words convey worlds of mystery and meaning. This third edition comprises 850 haiku and senryu (a related genre, usually humorous and concerned with human nature) written in English by 89 poets. A new forward details developments since the publication of the last edition.
